One way Samuel tells his story and deals with the frustrations of diabetes is through music. He is a percussionist and plays drums, and also writes music and lyrics. Samuel has his own band, and plays in the orchestra, jazz band, and chapel band at his school. Diagnosed in his freshman year of high school, Samuel is also a varsity football player and a Key Club member. He says he works hard to manage his blood sugar in order to remain active. He also tries to educate his coaches, teachers, and classmates about diabetes and the responsibilities that come with the disease. In addition to music and sports, Samuel enjoys skateboarding and hanging out with friends. As a delegate, he wants to build awareness of the daily effects of type 1, and highlight the importance of funding both for research and to relieve the financial burden on families.
