Age: 16
Age at T1D diagnosis: 12

Nikki, a native of the Netherlands, was diagnosed just over three years ago. Today, she looks forward to a cure “for now, but also for the future. I am young and have a whole life in front of me. Who knows what I can achieve?”

At Children’s Congress, Nikki hopes to meet delegates from around the world and to educate others about the differences between T1D and T2D. In fact, she and her mom reach out to radio stations and magazines whenever they notice people confusing the two diseases in programs and commercials. Diagnosed with celiac disease in addition to T1D, Nikki has given blood for clinical research. She enjoys riding her horse and serves as president of the youth board at her riding school. Nikki hopes to open a gluten-free bakery someday.
