Age: 16
Age at T1D diagnosis: 10

Mikaelie is deeply familiar with the ups and downs of having T1D. “Every day of my life seems completely different from the day before. One day my blood-glucose levels are extremely low and I feel sick and weak. Another day I may be high from some unknown cause. Type 1 diabetes is a new struggle that I have to overcome every day.” Her experience is one reason why Mikaelie is an advocate for T1D research funding.

An honor-roll student, soccer player, and accomplished swimmer, Mikaelie also spends time on causes near to her heart. She volunteers to work with younger kids at a swim club, is a member of both the Students Against Substance Abuse group and Green Club at her school, and takes time to educate those around her about T1D.
