Age: 16
Age at T1D diagnosis: 11

Cara has gold–medal goals. As a competitive figure skater and national silver medalist skater with a synchronized skating team, she also knows a lot about discipline. “One day I hope that all I have been through and my accomplishments are remembered as I stand on top of not only the national podium, but the world podium,” she says. When it comes to T1D, Cara shares a message of hope. She captains her JDRF Walk team, has made a public service announcement for JDRF, delivered speeches about her diagnosis, and has also been interviewed by the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin about her experience as a skater living with T1D. “Explaining my story is very important,” she says. “It is truly the only way to understand what type 1 diabetes is without having it.”
