Sam is a very creative teen who enjoys painting, drawing, sculpting, and making jewelry—she even received second and third place in her state fair’s art competition! She is the flute section leader in her school’s marching band, involved in student government, and participates in Science Olympiad, where she has earned several medals. Sam has always been fascinated by animals, especially birds and reptiles and she sees herself as a zoologist as an adult.

Living in Alaska makes it challenging to participate in JDRF events, but that does not stop Sam from promoting awareness and educating those around her about life with T1D. Sam doesn’t think parents should have to fight with suppliers and insurance companies for access to T1D therapies and devices vital to safety and health. “I want a future where diabetes is no longer a threat, a chronic illness that requires near constant vigilance.”
