An active advocate for type 1 diabetes causes since her diagnosis at age 10, Rachel has participated in support groups and attended many events to educate her community. Rachel has also become a JDRF Youth Ambassador. She addressed U.S. Representative Steve Israel at a Town Meeting to ask that government buildings be lit blue for type 1 awareness. Rachel also spoke with a Newsday Kidsday editor, who said he would welcome an article about diabetes in the publication. This advocacy experience will likely come in handy in Rachel's career aspirations to one day be a lawyer. In her free time, Rachel, a High Honor Roll student, participates in soccer, fencing, gymnastics, and playing piano. Rachel holds fundraisers at her school and with her Walk team, "Rachel's Renegades," and has already raised $6,000 this year. "I hope to bring awareness of the difference between type 1 and type 2," she says.
