Scholar, athlete, and person with T1D. That’s Maddie, a straight A Honor Roll student who also plays varsity tennis and soccer, and helped launch a surf camp for kids with T1D. An aspiring doctor, Maddie volunteers at a local hospital which featured her in an advertising campaign promoting its T1D care program for children. Maddie is a volunteer in JDRF’s Coastal Carolina Chapter office and a participant in the chapter’s JDRF One Walk, Gala, and Promise to Remember Me events. She mentors children newly diagnosed with T1D, and has spoken about living with the disease at her school, church, and local civic organizations. “I made the decision several years ago that I will defeat T1D,” says Maddie. “It will not defeat me.”
