Hayes is living proof that with effort and optimism, change is possible. Strengthened by that positive approach to life, he aspires to be an ambassador one day, to "help bring peace to our planet," and is a big supporter of diabetes research and awareness. Diagnosed at age eight (just a year after his younger sister was diagnosed), Hayes has benefitted from participation in a JDRF-funded clinical trial, helping researchers learn more about type 1. He and his family are extremely active with JDRF, raising awareness and helping with Walks and Galas. Hayes enjoys learning history – in fact, he even took it upon himself to memorize the Gettysburg Address! He also likes playing tennis and baseball, serving as an elected representative in his student government, and participating in Cub Scouts. In addition to becoming an ambassador one day, he wants to become a diabetes camp counselor and an author.
