In seventh grade, Gabriela earned a spot in the state finals for her science fair project about the effect of breakfast cereals on her blood sugar. The unique project also earned her notice from her mayor, senator, and representative. Gabriela, whose grandfather serves on the JDRF Board, also actively raises funds with "Gabriela's Gang" during JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, goes door to door with her brothers each year to raise money for research, and has spoken at many fundraising events about her life with diabetes. "I believe Congress needs to feel our story in order to fight for us," she says. Gabriela's hobbies include horseback riding, softball, and ballet. One day, she wants to work with children as a pediatric endocrinologist or as a teacher.
