Age at T1D diagnosis: 3

Managing T1D has taught Dominik the values of dedication and commitment in all aspects of life. An avid ice hockey player, he reflects on his adventures both on and off the rink: “I’m proud that I’ve stuck through those hard practices all these years and can see the accomplishment. I think I’ve learned a lot about not getting discouraged and being a good sport because of my everyday life with diabetes. I don’t give up easily.” Dominik counts overcoming T1D hurdles among his major achievements, such as when he was able to stay overnight at a friend’s house. “It was hard for my parents not to worry when I wasn’t home,” he says. “My accomplishments are learning to be independent, but smart enough to ask for help when I need it.”
