Age: 13
Age at T1D diagnosis: 3

Brett believes that T1D is more than a disease—it’s an opportunity. “I’m not angry; everyone has something, and my something is called T1D.” Brett’s advocacy is both tireless and inspirational. Last year alone, he spoke on Capitol Hill for JDRF 2012 Government Day, received his chapter’s Advocate of the Year Award, and discussed T1D in a televised school board meeting. Brett’s message for his classmates is the same as his message for Children’s Congress. “Don’t let your ‘something’ bring you down. Take your something and use it to educate people.”

An honors student, Brett enjoys playing tennis, golf, and basketball, and helping others. He volunteers for the Buddy Club, helping the physically challenged, and serves as a JDRF ambassador. In the future, he plans to continue serving his community.
