Age at T1D diagnosis: 11

Sawyer loves hockey and plays defense for three different teams. His goal is to play club hockey for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He says, “Each year I have to reeducate my new coaches and teammates on what type 1 is and why I need to prick my finger and take my blood sugar during games.” Sawyer takes part in JDRF One Walk and has attended his local JDRF Galas. He also wears a “Hockey Fights Diabetes” jersey at his practices to help raise awareness for an organization that helps fundraise for JDRF. “I am hoping that in the next decade we will find a cure and no longer have to fundraise or spend our government resources on healthcare to treat type 1 diabetes complications.”
