Lydia had just turned five when she was diagnosed. A few days later, she was testing her own blood sugar, and within weeks was giving herself insulin injections. Lydia's mother describes her as "responsible beyond her years." One of her hobbies, in fact, is playing "hard worker" with her dad. She also enjoys inventing things, fashion design, gymnastics, t-ball, and playing with her sisters and friends. One of Lydia's closest friends is her own cousin, Olivia, who also has type 1. The two girls have a website, www.cureforcousins.com, that shares their story and raises awareness about diabetes. The Harris family wants to share their story with policy makers, and continue raising awareness about type 1 and the need for research funding.
