Age at T1D diagnosis: 3

“Even though I don’t like having diabetes,” says Lila, “I have met some really good friends who I can talk to about diabetes.” She’s also met a number of celebs who live with T1D: Kyle Cochran from American Ninja Warrior, Crystal Bowersox, Charlie Kimball, Ryan Reed and Kendall Simmons, to name a few. But Lila has plenty of star power of her own: An all–star cheerleader, she competes year–round and even placed second in the U.S. Finals last year. She also loves English–style horseback riding, reading and writing. Lila makes time for T1D advocacy, too. She has created a JDRF Walk team with her fellow cheerleaders, talks to her class each year about T1D, speaks about the disease at her school’s health fair and recently mentored a newly diagnosed family friend.
