Shir from Israel
Profile:

At 16, Shir has lived more than half her life with diabetes. After she was diagnosed, she says, living with the disease seemed impossible. But she learned how to take care of herself, and got used to the feeling that she was different from her friends. Nowadays, she loves dancing, is studying chemistry and theatre, and is considering becoming a doctor. In Israel, Shir talks before groups of students at schools, has visited the minister of health, and even appeared on TV to demonstrate what life with diabetes is like. "The one thing I want most is a cure for this disease," she says. "I don't want to live in fear of what may happen in the future. I don't want to live like a robot. I just want to be normal."
