Hugo’s positive outlook on life shines brightly, even as he details the hardships of living with type 1 diabetes since the age of three. His desire to spread awareness about what it’s like to live with type 1 inspired him to become a Children’s Congress delegate. Hugo also helps to educate his classmates about diabetes. He and his younger brother, who also has diabetes, created a PowerPoint presentation about the disease to share with all of the health classes last year. They also helped the school nurse organize a diabetes walk at school.

This year, the Compton brothers want to make a movie about type 1 to show their classmates. A straight-A student, Hugo enjoys practicing lacrosse, downhill skiing, Nordic skiing, hiking, and drawing. He aspires to one day own a bakery with low-sugar treats for children with diabetes, and to be a dog trainer.
