He has won more than six awards for raising more than $1,000 for research toward a cure for type 1, and has appeared on Comcast newsmaker and in his local newspaper.

Now 17, she is more open about it and wants to spread awareness so that people will understand what it is she has. A youth ambassador for JDRF, she gives speeches about her story.

She helped her sister raise more than $400,000 for JDRF in 2008, and her Walk team, Mackenzie’s Miracle Makers, has raised more than $300,000 to help find a cure for diabetes.
