Grant from Oregon
Profile:

Around the time of his 12th birthday, Grant, 14, was at basketball tryouts when suddenly he couldn't run. Afterwards, he was so tired he could barely move. He kept feeling worse and his father, an endocrinologist, and mother, a clinical nurse specialist, quickly recognized the symptoms. He took control from the beginning, though, giving himself his very first insulin injection when he was in the hospital. A soccer goalie, a second baseman, a golfer, a downhill skier, and a basketball player, Grant, 14, has learned how to keep a close eye on his blood sugar levels and has achieved his goal of being a successful teenage athlete. He is considering being a doctor himself one day, and says it's important to him to help other kids succeed the way he has.
