Delegate: Emily
State: Oklahoma
Age: 17
Profile: Diagnosed at age nine, Emily was quick to learn how to care for herself, monitoring her blood sugar and giving herself shots. She had given her grandfather injections, and knew about the disease, but was still not prepared for her own diagnosis. When she watched her grandfather die from complications, she worried if that would happen to her. But she didn’t just sit around and worry. A month after being diagnosed, Emily was participating in JDRF Walks, raising over $70,000 over five years.
