Q'ianna from New York
Profile:

Q'ianna says that now she is 16, all she wants is to be a teenager "who can do normal teenager stuff and not sit on the sidelines watching everyone else." Diagnosed at 3, she got used to the daily care routine, but not the emotional feeling of "difference." "Who really wanted to play basketball with me, or even jump rope," she remembers thinking, "if they knew I might collapse because of exertion or my blood sugar level?" As a result, for years she tried to keep her diabetes a secret in school. When she became a teenager, sick of her routine, she began skipping blood checks and insulin doses. But she soon realized that "the problems we try to turn our faces from are still there to kick us."
