Profile: On September 20, 2000, Mark woke up just like every other day. He got dressed and hopped on the bus and walked into his third grade class. In just a few hours, his life had changed forever. Now 17, Mark uses an insulin pump, which replaces his shots, but is a constant reminder of how tied down he is. But being tied down doesn’t make him helpless, and Mark is very active.

Profile: Diagnosed three years ago, Ryan hated needles and getting shots, but now he’s more used to it, since he tests his blood sugar 12-14 times a day and wears an insulin pump. He also is affected in other ways, missing classes and baseball or soccer games if his blood sugar is low. A member of the Cub Scouts and his school’s Earth Watcher’s Club, Ryan has led a school diabetes walk and three JDRF Walk teams.
