Amy from North Carolina
Profile:

The first year after being diagnosed at age 8 was hardest for Amy. The constant insulin shots limited her freedom. "My life seemed to be scheduled around my injections," she remembers. Then her family moved, her new doctor put her on a pump, and things got better. Coming from a musical family, Amy is passionate about playing piano (classical) and accepts any opportunity to play for her church choir or other events. She considers herself "advanced, but with much still to learn." At 13, she is considering a career in music, in the ministry, or in medicine as an endocrinologist, although she hopes research makes this career choice obsolete. "Imagine how many lives would be changed if America was able to find a cure," she says.
