Jack D. from Michigan

Age: 9

Profile:

A member of his little league’s all-star team for the past two years, Jack also plays basketball, football, and golf. He would like to be a professional athlete one day, and then a successful business man. He appears healthy, but was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age three. Now eight, Jack uses an insulin pump, which has made management of his disease easier. He worries about a lot of things—like if his blood sugar will be too high during a test, or a game, or too low while playing at friend’s house when his parents aren’t there to care for him. Since his diagnosis, he and his family have been very involved with JDRF to raise awareness and funds toward a cure. Jack spoke as a youth ambassador in 2007 at the JDRF Deuce Coupe 75th Anniversary in Detroit. His family has a Walk team, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, which has raised more than $100,000 since 2004. Both his parents and his grandparents volunteer with JDRF. As a delegate, Jack is hoping he can help influence Congress to support research toward a cure.
