Profile:
The last time Surya ate sugar freely was in October 2003, when she cheered her dad on as he ran the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. A few weeks later, she found she could not get out of bed and was diagnosed with diabetes. "I cannot describe how sad those days were without feeling like crying again." Now 10, Surya does everything she can to raise money and awareness. Last fall, she hosted a musical concert fundraiser at the Boston Ballet School, at which she and friends played instruments, sang, danced, or recited poems to raise money for research. She also participated in her third Walk in Boston and educated other students in her school about living with diabetes.
