Although she and her family are still trying to get used to the insulin shots and blood sugar monitoring, she is still active, enjoying swimming, soccer, and baseball. She also likes to draw, color, create crafts, and bake. One of her main accomplishments is that at five years old she has made it through her first year of having type 1 diabetes.

A blue belt in karate, Sam also enjoys drama and is going to start drum lessons. A vegetarian, he would like to be a marine biologist because he loves animals and the ocean.

She’d like to pursue either science or politics so that she can help to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, which changed her life when she was diagnosed at age 12, and other diseases that affect millions of people worldwide.

Profile: Diagnosed a year and a half ago, Sam, now 14, sees an upside to his diagnosis: “I used to talk about losing a baseball game like it was the end of the world, but now, I have this realization that it’s not so bad. There are so many worse things that can happen.” He raised almost $6,000 at JDRF’s Walk and is passionate about spreading awareness about the disease.
