Ashley's interests range from sports to academics to singing, dancing, acting, and art. She's proud of her many accomplishments, including winning the league championship in softball twice in a row and being selected for the Gifted and Talented Academic Program. "And I finished the mile run ahead of every girl in my class!" she adds. Ashley, 11, has had diabetes for over four years. For fundraisers held at the Askin home, her parents invite diabetes experts to speak. "Usually everyone is in tears when they hear what a kid like me goes through every day," Ashley reports. She wants our legislators to see for themselves exactly what life with diabetes means for children: "Either it's taking blood tests or shots, or it's the pain of just wanting to be a normal child."
