Alan from Illinois

Videos of Alan at his fourth birthday party show him sitting listlessly at a table while all his friends are running around. The very next day, during what was supposed to be a routine pre-school physical, his doctor diagnosed him with diabetes. "Diabetes has affected my whole life," Alan, now 14, says. He loves watching the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears and playing soccer, baseball, football and basketball. Alan has done his part for research, participating in fundraising walks and runs. Now he wants Congress to step up. "Everyone is always worried about government spending, but this type of spending makes sense," he says. "If we spend a little more and find a cure, we can ultimately save all those treatment dollars. It's the long-range view."
