Celene from Iowa
Profile:

Celene, 13, and her family have managed to adjust to living with diabetes, monitoring blood sugar levels closely, and jumping instantly into what her mom calls "automatic mode" whenever Celene has a seizure. But Celene had to give up the clarinet in band because her fingers hurt from the constant pricking, and one of her classmates warned another classmate not to share a pizza slice with Celene--as if diabetes were contagious. Celene has done much to promote diabetes awareness, speaking to local service organizations and on a local radio show. She also has been a youth ambassador for the Greater Iowa JDRF chapter and been in every JDRF Walk since she was diagnosed. "For the sake of millions of people, say YES to more funding for diabetes research," she says.
