Profile:
Sam, 14, is proud of the fact that he started using an insulin pump at the age of 6, four years after his diagnosis. At the time, he was in the youngest patient in the Rocky Mountain region to use one. "It worked out very well," he says, "and now lots of little kids have pumps. I'm proud I led the way for them." He has promoted diabetes awareness by being open about his diabetes, taking part in clinical trials, and funding research through the Walk. Sam has played competitive lacrosse for six years and also snowboards, skateboards, mountain bikes, and plays football. He dreams of getting a sports scholarship to college. Besides sports, he likes to play the electric guitar and make short videos with his parents' digital camera.
