Johnnie from California
Profile:

Johnnie, 16, climbed Mt. Whitney (the highest mountain in the contiguous U.S.) and other high peaks to prove anything is possible with type 1 diabetes. At school, he plays on the varsity basketball and baseball teams and is a member of the honor society. He's into punk rock and organized a concert to benefit a family who had lost their home in a fire. Johnnie wants to educate people about the seriousness and hardships of diabetes. "I think the challenges of managing this disease are especially difficult as a teenager," he says. He also wants lawmakers to know how expensive diabetes is for families to manage. While he hasn't decided on a specific career yet, he knows he wants to help people and make the world a better place to live.
