Heather, 17, realized a long-held dream when she was chosen to join Pump Girls, a pop music group of teenagers with type 1 who wear insulin pumps and aim to inspire other young people with diabetes to overcome obstacles and attain their dreams. It was a milestone in her ongoing effort to tell the world: "Yes, we have diabetes and it is challenging to take good care of ourselves, but we are not alone, and we are working toward a cure." Among her other accomplishments: Bronze and Silver Awards in Girl Scouts, a 4.0 GPA three out of the last four semesters, and membership in her high school's Business Academy. She plans to study architecture and music in college, and she says, "I will always be an advocate for diabetes issues."
