Peter from Alabama

Peter, 8, says the hardest part about diabetes is being pulled out of class repeatedly so the nurse can check his blood sugar. He also doesn't like how the four or five shots a day interfere with sports and swimming and sometimes make him late for school. "I can't eat frosting or Twinkies or be at a birthday party without my mom or dad staying," he says. Peter participates in the Walk every year, on a team the family formed right after his diagnosis called Peter and the Colander Heads. So-named because his dad is a chef, team members decorate the colanders and wear them on their heads. "I want a cure so no other kid will have to do all the stuff I have to," he says.
