Lena from Alabama
Profile:

Type 1 diabetes is, unfortunately, not new to Lena's family. Her dad and aunt have both had it for years, so she was familiar with the need to take shots every day when she was diagnosed at age 4. Still, it is not easy dealing with the disease. She has even been hospitalized twice because a stomach virus played havoc with her blood sugar levels despite her parents' best efforts. Now 8, Lena enjoys competing in gymnastics, swimming and other water sports, reading, and shopping. Every summer, she attends a diabetes camp and was top fundraiser last year in a letter-writing campaign at the camp. She loves animals and hopes to become a veterinarian. "I dream of the day when I can say, 'I used to have type 1 diabetes.'"
