Meet the Delegates from 2009

These children with type 1 diabetes - ages 4 to 17, represented all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and five other countries - converged on Washington, D.C. from June 22-24, 2009, to tell their stories and urge lawmakers to help find a cure.

State: New York
Age: 9
Profile: A cub scout, Nathan enjoys swimming, basketball, t-ball, and bike riding. With his family, he has promoted diabetes awareness in his community by raising thousands of dollars through JDRF Walks, and selling paper sneakers and golf balls since his diagnosis at age three.

State: Arizona
Age: 12
Profile: Diagnosed at age two, Daniel, now nine, can remember being in the ambulance that day. He was happy to get his insulin pump, since he hated getting so many shots, but now he’s getting tired of it. He has participated with his family in JDRF events, and has sold paper sneakers to help raise money for research toward a cure. He and his brother have spoken about diabetes, and he was in a documentary about the disease. Daniel plays basketball in two leagues, and has won trophies in both.

Profile: Jacob was diagnosed at age four. He and his family started a Walk team, Team Jacob, that year, which has now raised more than $150,000. Jacob likes to play all sorts of sports, including baseball, flag football, basketball, fishing, and golf. He also just started guitar lessons. At school, he is on bus patrol, a member of the media squad and the Beta Club, and is an honor student.

Profile: Nine months after being diagnosed with diabetes, Alexandra, who had felt like the disease controlled her life, felt like she was beginning to control the disease. When she was in the hospital, she received a blanket that someone had donated. It had made her feel so much better that she wanted to do that for other kids who were sick. She started making and donating blankets to the hospital where she had been.
