These children with type 1 diabetes—ages 4 to 17, representing all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and five other countries—will converge on Washington, D.C. from June 22-24, 2009, to tell their stories and urge lawmakers to help find a cure.

Delegate: Vicky
State: Missouri
Age: 14
Profile: Vicky was diagnosed when she was six. She has raised more than $10,000 in the JDRF Walk. Vicky enjoys reading and writing, and plays violin and tennis. She is involved in her school’s animal welfare club, and the literary magazine. She also enjoys painting, drawing, and ceramics. One day she would like to be a surgeon.

Age: 11
Profile: Nicholas is involved in football, baseball, and recently became a black belt first degree in Tae-kwon-do. He is interested in animals, and loves to read. He has had about 6,500 insulin shots and nearly 30,000 finger pricks over the last nine years.

Profile: Raegan plays French horn in her school band, and is the captain of the Colorguard. She is also in the choir, and loves to sing and play the piano. She wants to be a doctor, and when she was diagnosed at age 11, decided to become an endocrinologist.

Age: 10
Profile: Diagnosed at 15 months, Taylor and her family began volunteering with JDRF that year. Taylor was part of a clinical study for insulin pumps in toddlers. By five, she could program it mostly by herself. Recently, she began using a continuous glucose monitor. Now nine, she is an avid sportswoman, playing soccer, skiing, golfing, swimming, and doing tae-kwon-do, in which she is a blue center belt.

Ryan, 11, wears an insulin pump, which helps him manage his disease easier, but is a constant reminder that he has a disease. But it hasn’t stopped him: Ryan’s favorite sports include hockey, baseball, and football, but he also enjoys snowboarding, skiing, wake boarding and water skiing.
